Shiva Remake: Will It Still Make Sense Now?

Ram Gopal Varma’s college drama film Shiva, featuring Akkineni Nagarjuna in the lead role, was a big hit in the 90s. It made people pay attention to Telugu cinema and inspired many other movies with similar themes of youth, action, and college life, not just in Tollywood but also in other languages. That’s why Shiva is considered a cult classic.

After 36 years, the movie is coming back to theaters starting on the 14th.

This re-release is giving moviegoers a chance to relive the experience with better sound and visuals. Both Nagarjuna and RGV are working hard to promote the film. In media talks, they have shared their honest views about remaking the movie.

When asked if his sons Naga Chaitanya or Akhil would want to remake Shiva, Nagarjuna said they don’t have the courage to try.

While his comments might be true, as neither of his sons have shown interest in remaking any of his famous films so far, trying to recreate Shiva today would be difficult for many reasons.

Shiva was a unique experience for moviegoers back then.

It changed the way Telugu cinema was made and earned respect in other language cinemas as well. Many scenes from the film are still relevant today. But a lot has changed since Shiva first came out.

Now, Telugu cinema is different.

Big, flashy movies with lots of action, high-tech visuals, and big fights are the norm. That makes trying to remake a film like Shiva risky. If it fails, there could be a lot of backlash, and it might also damage the original film’s legacy. It just doesn’t make sense anymore.
