Currently, there are many heroes in Tamil Nadu who have a huge fan base and can create a box office hit with a good film. Rajnikanth, Kamal Haasan, Ajith, Suriya, Vikram, Dhanush, Sivakarthikeyan - all these heroes can bring in enough box office revenue with a good film in both domestic and overseas markets.
However, there is only one hero in Kollywood right now who can withstand reviews and criticism and the word of mouth does not affect the box office revenue of his film. He is "Thalapathy" Vijay. He is a popular hero among the youth and family segments. And he is currently the only hero in Kollywood who has a very good market not only in Tamil Nadu and India but also in around 20 countries abroad.
Beast, Varisu, Leo, and The Greatest of All Time (GOAT) are his last four films. Of these four films, not a single one got consistently positive word of mouth, yet all four films made huge profits for distributors and theatre owners across the globe. Her film with Nelson Dilipkumar, Beast, was actually termed as a major flop and was released at the same time as the much-awaited sequel, KGF - Chapter 2. Despite this, the film managed to maintain its box office success and was a safe venture for almost all distributors involved.
Kamal Haasan's Indian 2, Vijay's GOAT, Superstar Rajnikanth's Bettaiyan and Suriya's Kanguva are the four big Kollywood films that were released in the last few months, but none of these four films garnered good reviews from the audience. None of the other three films were able to offset the negative word of mouth and their box office numbers tanked. Only Vijay's film GOAT managed to gross around 400 crores worldwide despite enduring the negative reviews. The film was a phenomenal success in both Tamil Nadu and the international market. Vijay recently announced his political party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam and after completing his previous film Thalapathy 69 starring H Vinoth, he will now focus on politics to give it a go in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections in 2026. Vijay's absence at the box office will undoubtedly come as a big loss to producers, distributors, theatre owners and all other stakeholders in the industry.
