Since the Me Too moment began, there have been more and more cases of actresses coming out and suing their male co-stars, directors, producers and associated technicians.
This movement has gained further momentum especially in the Malayalam film industry after the famous Hema Committee report found that several actresses had actually been tortured during the making of Malayalam films over the years.
In this connection, an actress, who wishes to remain anonymous for privacy reasons, has filed a case against noted film director Balachandra Menon and the case has reached the Kerala High Court. She has alleged that the director misbehaved and touched her inappropriately during the shooting of the film in 2007. She filed the case 17 years after the incident. Veteran director Balachandra Menon, defending, pleaded not guilty and alleged that the actress wanted to defame her after so many years. "I have directed 40 films, won two national awards, I have also won the Padmasri Award. Why would I do something so cruel?"
Interestingly, the Supreme Court gave a very interesting opening speech in which it was observed that not only women but also men have self-respect and self-esteem. The court assured the Chief Justice that the investigation would be conducted in a reasonable manner. In fact, interim bail was also granted in the case.
As far as the case itself is concerned, it is strange and surprising that something like this has surfaced in court after 17 long years when the actress decided to file a complaint against the director.
