The Indian government has announced this year's Padma awards before Republic Day.
The legendary actor Mammootty has been honored with the prestigious Padma Bhushan award by the committee. This is a well-deserved recognition for his huge contributions to Malayalam cinema, with a long career filled with many unforgettable roles.
Mammootty is seen as one of the most important figures in the Malayalam film industry.
He is one of the few actors who helped take Mollywood beyond Kerala with his fame and popularity. He is a big name who raised the image of Mollywood nationally and internationally through his great performances over more than five decades.
Born in 1951 as Muhammad Kutty Panaparambil Ismail, he later changed his name to Mammootty.
He began his acting career in 1971 with the drama film *Anubhavangal Paalichakal*. He started as a supporting actor and later became a main lead. He gradually became a popular hero with several strong and memorable characters.
Some of his most famous roles came from movies like *Bramayugam*, *Bheeshma Parvam*, *Ore Kadal*, *Thalapathi*, *Pathemari*, *Raja Manikyam*, *Kottayam Kunjachan*, *Prajapati*, and *Bus Conductor*.
He also acted in a Telugu film called *Swathi Kiranam* and impressed Tollywood audiences with his subtle acting.
Throughout his successful career, Mammootty has received many awards for his excellent acting.
He has won three national film awards and seven Kerala State film awards. For his outstanding work in the film industry, the Indian government gave him the fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, in 1998. He also received the second-highest Kerala award, the 'Kerala Prabha,' in 2022.
After almost 30 years, he is once again being honored with a Padma award by the Indian government, and this time it is the Padma Bhushan.
This recognition is long overdue because he is considered one of the pioneers who helped take Malayalam cinema to great heights with his contributions.
The fact that he has acted in more than 400 films over 55 years shows the amount of service he has given to cinema.
Even at the age of 74, Mammootty continues to be a leading figure in Malayalam cinema, with roles that are well-liked by audiences and praised by critics. He has five films lined up for the next couple of years.
