SS Rajamouli, acclaimed filmmaker of Indian cinema, is currently working on his most ambitious project, Varanasi. This globe-trotting action adventure is inspired by ancient mythology and is based on the epic Ramayana. The film features Indian superstar Mahesh Babu and Prithviraj Sukumaran in lead roles, along with Priyanka Chopra.
From the moment it was announced, Varanasi has been speculated to be a two-part film in the media and among fans, although no official confirmation came from Rajamouli and his team.
When Rajamouli made his epic action film Baahubali in two parts, the idea of splitting Varanasi into two parts remained a possibility given the vast scope of the story, which travels from an African safari to Antarctica's icebergs.
However, the speculation has now been resolved following Rajamouli's recent interview with Hollywood media outlet Screen Rant during the Varanasi glimpse launch in Hyderabad last November, where he clarified that Varanasi will be a single-part film with a runtime of approximately three hours.
He explained that the team had initially considered making it a two-part film but quickly abandoned the idea after starting production.
Rajamouli expressed confidence that the runtime is not an issue as long as the audience is engaged and connected with the story.
Regarding the much-discussed IMAX format, Rajamouli mentioned that the decision to shoot the film in a 1.43:1 aspect ratio came during the pre-visualization phase.
This choice was driven by the need to capture the grandeur of the narrative, which spans multiple worlds. He remains optimistic that India will have sufficient IMAX screens by the time Varanasi is released.
Although the release date is still a year away, the film has already generated massive global attention thanks to the mind-blowing title glimpse unveiled a few months ago.
This hype has been further boosted by the recent unique announcement of the release date by the production team.
