Before this, there were guesses that over 500 women and girls went missing in Delhi within the first 15 days of 2026.
This would have made up almost two-thirds of all missing persons cases, according to police records. Out of the 807 people who were reported missing between January 1st and 15th, 509 were women and girls.
But on Friday, Delhi Police said the widespread claims about a huge rise in missing girls were just hype, created by people using social media for money.
They promised to take strict action against those who are using public fear for profit.
This came after a lot of people were worried because of the reports that said more than 800 girls had disappeared in the city in just 15 days.
Earlier, something similar happened in Mumbai.
At that time, Mumbai Police quickly denied the rumors and started legal action against those who were spreading the false information.
People on social media are now criticizing the makers of a specific film for spreading wrong information and causing public fear with stories about kidnaps and missing women and children.
